Saturday 9th June 2018 saw our 2nd club Annual Paintball Event at NPF Bassets Pole, Birmingham.
It saw our members, family and friends join together in order to take on our opponents for the day. Once registration was complete, we were issued our battle gear, our ammo and then came the most essential item - our weapon of choice.
Some of the team choosing to upgrade weapons, purchase paintball grenades and flash-bangs we could see that our team meant business and were taking no prisoners! After being assigned to the Blue team, it was goggles on and straight into the battlefield.
The battle commenced, the blue team played very strategically, our members working together and on occasions being some of the last men standing. So it went on, battle after battle, the humid weather, the sweat pouring from us, and the sprints to the enemy base taking its toll.
Shots were taken to the head, back, torso, legs and arms throughout the day mounted with the bruises clearly visible on our team. Being hit from a distance was painful enough but being shot at point-blank range was an experience which we would never want to repeat in a hurry.
After a brief break in play for lunch, it was straight back on to the battlefield. Our weapons reloaded and our ammo topped up it was straight back into the action.
The final points game saw the blue team securing its position within the Wild West area, our team member being protected from the enemy fire within the centre of the play zone. The enemy quickly being taken out until our team was the last standing.
A resounding win from the blue team on the day with the red squad accepting final defeat.
The last game of the day was every team for themselves, joining with other groups from the day's paintball action.
With paintballs flying from every direction it was difficult to tell friend from foe. With smoke grenades filling the game zone and with a no-kill policy we advanced on our enemy releasing every last piece of ammunition.
Hit with the enemy and friendly fire the casualty rate had grown at the end of the match. The marshals too being casualties from both sides. Battered and bruised walking away we reflected on a fantastic day spent with great friends.
An experience for us all but most importantly meeting up with old friends and making new ones on the way. A brilliant day had by all and something which we hope to repeat for a future event.
Daily advancement in brewing knowledge!
Well, that certainly was the case for the Five of Nine Club, family and friends on Saturday 30th September when we visited the Two Towers Brewery, Bath Street, Birmingham for our latest social event. As most of us are quite experienced in the art of beer and ale sampling it was such a refreshing change to obtain an insight into the science of brewing the perfect ale.
Meeting at the Gunmakers Arms which is attached to the brewery we sampled some of the ales even before the tour had kicked off!
Met by our guide we were guided to the small micro-brewery at the rear of the pub where our very informative talk commenced.
Combined with a font of knowledge and much humour our guide described in great detail how the ale came from crop to barrel and the amount of study and work that goes into the perfect ale.
During the tour, we were able to have a break in order to sample a few of the free ales that we had discussed earlier and the science that goes into making that specific taste.
The ales brewed being cleverly named after people and places linked to the local area, the Hockley Gold Ale being one of the favourites.
Following the tour, we tucked into a small pub lunch at the Gunmakers Arms (with of course a few accompanying ales), enough to fill the gap before moving on to several pubs in the local area finishing off at the Lost and Found pub.
After a great afternoon and evening, our bellies being full with ale and beer we said goodbye to our members and their guests to what again was a very successful and well turned out social event for the Five of Nine Club.
Something to think about when we tuck into our next pint, the hard work and dedication that goes on in the background for our tasting pleasure
Thank you to all that attended and for making it another great event.
See you all very soon for our next event, our trip to Scotland on Saturday 25th November which will prove to be very popular and a great experience.
Please look for details on the website or contact the social events secretary Carl.

WEST MIDLANDS CENTRAL ACCIDENT, RESUSCITATION & EMERGENCY TEAM (CARE)
CARE is a charitable organisation who respond to serious medical incidents within the West Midlands. It consists of a group of volunteer doctors and nurses who provide advanced pre-hospital medical care to seriously injured and critically unwell patients.
The charitable aims of the organisation are the relief of persons suffering injury or illness by the provision of immediate medical care and advancing the study of immediate medical care by the provision of training and research.
CARE brings a highly skilled medical team capable of providing life saving interventions at the roadside and elsewhere. Their treatment of critically ill patients includes those severely injured in car crashes, industrial accidents, shootings and stabbings, through to adult and child cardiac arrests and those with serious medical problems, such as heart attacks, fits, and breathing problems.
BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Founded in the late 1980’s around the time of the national ambulance strikes, CARE has evolved from a ‘flying squad’ originally based at the now closed Birmingham Accident Hospital to the successful and highly respected organisation seen today offering pre-hospital emergency care across the region and in areas where air access is limited or impossible. Working alongside West Midlands Ambulance Service, each CARE team consists of three to four volunteer doctors, nurses, paramedics and other healthcare professionals who deliver enhanced critical care to seriously injured and unwell patients. Most of the CARE team work in NHS hospitals in their day-to-day professional life, volunteering spare time to respond with the charity.
